Annual Review 2008 of BLS Inc.

A successful year ends for BLS. The factors that made this year special are also the advances made with the software RailOpt:

  • To ease the planners’ life, the RailOpt Superuser-Organisation was created. This means that planners do not have to go to RailOpt Administration with everyday problems. It is the superuser’s task to support users in their daily work, perform release tests and coordinate new demands.

  • Until the Release 3.2, short-term planning in RailOpt was done using the “Preparation” and “Short-Term Planning” Agents for capacity reasons. This meant that an additional transfer was necessary, and not the entire short-term period could be loaded and edited in short-term planning. With the change, it is possible to load up to 42 days in a single agent, enabling BLS to perform all short-term changes in the Short-Term Planning agent.

  • Since the timetable change on 14.12.2008, all of BLS’s train drivers receive, in addition to the shift plan, the run sequences including low speed areas and additional information. The drivers receive these up-to-date sheets daily. The distribution of annual shift plans was dropped due to this. The documents are distributed to drivers in pdf-format using a web application.

  • Since not every driver is qualified for every type of locomotive, it is important to make sure that shifts assigned to drivers contain only the types of locomotives the driver has qualifications for. This validation mechanism is automatically performed by RailOpt. The planner immediately sees missing qualifications and can alter the shift assignment.

  • While assigning services to personnel, there are 43 work-time rules that need to be considered. These rules are checked in all RailOpt Agents, which ensures that planners can see work-time rule violations and respond in time.

  • So the customers at stations can see, which wagon is at which location (e.g. 1st class), the wagon sequence must already be considered during planning. This functionality is now included in RailOpt.

  • All infrastructure systems that require data concerning trains and their composition, gather the data from KompoEVU. With RailOpt, BLS has the comfortable possibility of redirecting the data directly from the system via KompoEVU to the infrastructure system. This, for instance, informs customers about the composition of trains or the system I-Prix receives the necessary information for route price calculations.

  • Based on the planning process for rolling stock and drivers, the planning for cleaning and on-board personnel is also performed. In all personnel categories, work-time rules are constantly evaluated. Due to the integration of the two new personnel areas in RailOpt, all relevant activities necessary for a train run can be planned and tracked using one system.
With all these developments in 2008, decisive steps have been taken to make RailOpt an integrated planning system for train operating companies.
