New Line Calculation for Cost Transparency at BLS AG “The new line calculation is a meaningful step for the BLS, because we can measure the efficiency and effectiveness of our resources per train and line with the detailed actual data from RailOpt – during planning and operation. Also, we can plan and monitor the load and economic value of a line by monitoring the frequencies and profits. We have made a quantum leap in our product controlling department.” This is a quote of Hans Flury, Deputy Director and CFO at BLS AG (Switzerland) concerning the new line calculation. It is based on a 4-level contribution to profit calculation for planning and analysis of activities in regional passenger transit. The necessary information is delivered by Qnamic Inc.’s software RailOpt. The new accounting possibilities enable BLS AG to evaluate their personnel and rolling stock planning quicker and with more detail, react flexibly to plan changes and control the running operation with accurate reporting. Next to this flexibility and complete cost transparency, the product calculation also offers an efficient reporting system. A detailed monthly reporting at line, partial line or product level allows BLS to recognize deviations and react quickly. Furthermore, the requirements for reporting to the public are covered. The goal of the project was to reduce the internal and external efforts for reporting in the passenger transit department and generally increase transparency in the operative value chain. The BLS AG is the second largest train operating company in Switzerland. Its main activities include regional passenger transit using trains and buses, shipping in the Berner Oberland as well as rail-bound cargo transport. |
