Qnamic preannounces the ProductivityBooster_2020

Qnamic preannounces the ProductivityBooster_2020. The ProductivityBooster_2020 is the combination of Intelligent Resource Management (available within the Qnamic products RailOpt Passenger, Cargo, Depot and People) and a powerful decision support tool on top, designed to provide decision support on different planning levels of decision making: long term, mid term, short term and realtime (dispatching).

ProductivityBooster_2020 are multi-function powertools which, in the capable hands of a planner, enhance his (normal / human) capabilities. And thus, boosting the productivity of your train operating company.

ProductivityBooster_2020 is flexible constructing, repairing, advising, warning, explaining and monitoring.

  • Constructing: automatically plans a mass amount of run of the mill tasks using a best fit first strategy. Fast.

  • Repairing: problem areas in the plan, where there is a concentration of conflicting constraints, can be graphically selected and locally repaired. The techniques used are similar to the disentanglement of a knot. Very Fast.

  • Advising: can give (alternative) suggestions during construction or repair. GPS-like real-time advise. Real-Time.

  • Explaining: (alternative) suggestions are displayed as a sorted list with detailed cost break-down. Most cost-effective suggestion is placed on top of the list. Real-Time.

  • Warning: (alternative) suggestions which are forbidden because they break a hard constraints are marked in red. Real-Time.

  • Monitoring: KPI quantifications constantly keep track of the quality of the plan. Real-Time.
ProductivityBooster_2020 works completely integrated, meaning directly on the same activities the planner is manipulating on his Gantt and within the same system of rules. Therefore no additional interfacing to a separate datamodel is required. With its user-friendly and transparent configuration the decision support with ProductivityBooster_2020 is not a black-box as many other “tools” on the market.

This is not a “magic wand” story like you hear in fairy tales. Frogs are not turned into beautiful princes. Perfectly optimized plans do not miraculously appear out of thin air with the wave of a magical wand or by throwing a horseshoe over the fence.

Any computer system, no matter how intelligent the algorithms, is harnessed/confined by its closed world model. Assuming a computer could outperform a human being on decision-making in an open world is not only silly, but an unfruitful and irrelevant antagonistic approach. Train operating companies operate heavy machinery to transport goods and people at high speed in a crowded outdoor environment where almost anything can happen.

The dominant presence of the human factor in such setting requires an extreme planning flexibility such that policies, rules and procedures can be balanced against cost/profit considerations while maintaining a difficult to grasp human(e) character. No closed world model can ever grasp the complexities decision making takes in such a planning environment.

Therefore our intelligent decision support tool needs a high degree of human planner involvement to be of any support at all. In this spirit we designed the ProductivityBooster_2020. Not competing against the human planner, but empowering him.

  • Built, 10 years ahead of its time, hence 2020.

  • Providing 20/20 clear vision to the planner onto the plan.
Throughout the development of the ProductivityBooster_2020 Qnamic has been working closely together with its customer base to specify requirements as to keep a focus on usability. Qnamic’s collaboration with the University made sure we stayed in touch with state of the art algorithmic evolutions. Early adopter BLS already gained several benefits from the ProductivityBooster and we are planning for more when early next year the ProductivityBooster will be available within our product portfolio in a first version. Some of the benefits:

  • Automation of repetitive tasks

  • Reducing time/effort spent on building a plan

  • Reducing time/effort spent on repairing a plan

  • Increased transparency by improved KPI reporting

  • Cost accounting
For the final stage of development of the ProductivityBooster_2020, Qnamic will intensify the collaboration with its customer base.
